Clothing is an important part of today's lifestyles.
Clothing provides protection against the temperature and the weather conditions, as well as helping to kep people cool in hot climates.
Clothing is also a fashion statement for many people. The clothes that people wear shows their status in society, their income and their aspirations in life.
Some clothing is functional. We have mentioned the need to be protected from extremes of weather; rain, cold, sunshine for example.
But clothing can also provide protection for the activities that people are involved in. Riding a motorbike without a helmet, gloves and full protection from falling off, would not be a sensible thing to do!

Clothing also has social and cultural meanings. It represents status and position. Within religion clothing defines the position of the person. The 'business' suit generally distinguishes which the more senior people (although this is not always the case!)
